Having a fun fall break

The University of Dayton gave their student’s a four day fall break, I could say that a 95% of students went home for the break, however, I stayed here with my friends taking in consideration how far we are from home. Staying here was boring at first, but then we found out how to have fun. We usually stayed in the floors lounge and played monopoly and other board games. The best part was going to Kings Island. Kings Island is a kids amusement park located in Mason, Ohio. We took and uber and spent the whole day there. Riding roller coasters with your friends is so cool. Even though the lines for the roller coasters were hour and a half long, we enjoyed it because we got to talk about fun things. At 11 pm, we decided to hop into a two hour wait time line for a wood roller coaster. The weather was around 45 degrees, so we were freezing. After waiting almost two hours, we got to enjoy our last ride and decided to come back to the University of Dayton. When we arrived here, we ordered a pizza and talked about our day. It was really fun and entertaining. Other things we did this break was study and do a spa day. It was a cool break and we really got to enjoy it doing different fun things. Therefore, fall break was a good break that we all needed. Taking a break from school is necessary and it’s a good way to advance school work.

My Dog Brocoly

I have a dog named Brocoly, he is a shitzu. Brocoly has long hair and he is black and white. He is 15 years old and got home when I was 3 years old. My dad gave him the name Brocoly because we were eating and my mom accidentally dropped a brocoly and Brocoly ran directly to the brocoly and ate it. At that time, he was named Oreo, but as soon as he ate the Brocoly my dad started calling him Brocoly. Brocoly was born a Thanksgiving day 15 years ago. He is really friendly, adorable, cute, fuzzy, and a sleepyhead. Brocoly usually gets in my bed whenever I’m there, he also wakes up my mom and dad every morning. Brocoly loves going to the grooming, he is so happy when he goes there. Every time he visits the vet, the doctor places a handkerchief in his neck and he looks extremely cute. I definitely miss Brocoly since I’m a far away from home. My brother and I are in charge of getting him water and food, whenever Brocoly had an empty plate, he ran to my brother and started running in circles. Having Brocoly as a pet is the best, I am ready to see him and play with him for hours and hours. He is such a cute and adorable dog. Brocoly’s dad was raised by my uncle and Brocoly’s mother was raised by my godfather. Brocoly’s parents passed away a couple of years ago. Whenever I FaceTime my mother, she records Brocoly so I can see him.

Change of Chairs

I graduated from Academia Maria Reina High School, my high school’s location is in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Every year, my high school had an activity called “Cambio de Sillas” which translates to Change of Chairs. The Change of Chairs is an activity done at the end of the school year, usually, at the beginning of May. The activity consists of high school seniors decorating their high school uniform with the colors and letters of the university they’ll be attending in August. Also, high school juniors decorate their uniform blue considering that in my high school, from 7th to 11th grade you wear white and as a senior you wear blue. The activity is really fun because you see everyone dressed up with the colors of their university and it is really nice. That day it’s a no class day, all the students from my school come to the school, but there are no classes that day. At the end of the day, we all go to the auditorium and each grade seats in their corresponding chairs. The class president of each class (from 7th to 11th grade) give a speech saying goodbye to the seniors. After the speech, the juniors enter the auditorium, dance, and seat in their corresponding chairs, then the seniors enter, dance and seat in their corresponding chairs. At that time, people start crying because the senior president gives a beautiful speech about the last seven years. Then, the president asks for all seniors to stand up from the senior chairs and join the auditorium stage, after that, the juniors dance and run in zigzag to the senior chairs and sit there. It is a really nice activity and definitely really fun.

Challenging Myself

The University of Dayton has two major business competitions: Future Flyer Pitch Competition and Flyer Pitch Competition. The difference is that the Future Flyer Pitch is for high school seniors that plan to attend the University of Dayton. Last year, when I was a high school senior, I saw a flyer from the Future Flyer Pitch Competition and I was really interested. I read the instructions and decided to participate in the competition. For the first round, I had to create a two-minute video presenting a problem in my local community and solving it. After dedicating long hours of work to the video I submitted it and in January received a letter saying that I passed to the second round. The second round consisted of attending the University of Dayton and presenting a two-minute live pitch. For this round, I had to create a product or service that promoted entrepreneurial thinking among young students. I decided to create a really cool app that matched future professionals with retired professionals. I dedicated a lot of hours to this app and went to the University of Dayton in April and presented my pitch. The day of the pitch, after the competition, there was a banquet for all the participants. There, the winners were announced and received the award. I received the second place award and was extremely happy with the results. I thank my mom and dad for helping me and for believing in my product. Participating was a really challenging experience, but it was definitely worth the time and results.

Fencing.

Having a hobby is something everyone should have to entertain themselves in their free times. For me, Fencing is more of a passion, not a hobby, but still, I do it for fun in my free time, so it is a hobby. Fencing is a sport that works in combat between two people. Each fencing athlete has its own sword, which can be, épée, foil or saber. When my dad was 13 years old he went to his best friend’s house and saw a fencing sword, at that time he did not know anything about the sport, so his best friend told him that that sword belongs to his sister and he told him a little bit about the sport. Since that day, my dad loved the idea about fencing, so he joined a club. 5 years after that, when my dad was seventeen and a half, he made it to the Puerto Rican National Fencing Team. Now, my other 4 siblings do fencing and so do I. Fencing is a huge part of me, now that I’m in college I don’t have the opportunity to fence, but as soon as I get home I’m sure I will keep on fencing. I have traveled to different places because of fencing. I have met so many people through this sport and I’m eternally grateful for it. Doing fencing makes me so happy and it liberates me from stress. Therefore, fencing is my passion and I’m grateful that I have that sport in my life.

College Experience

In May 2019, I decided I wanted to commit to the University of Dayton. I arrived at the University of Dayton on August 15, since that day, I have had a blast. I have met so many people and I love all my classes. It all started with an orientation, which was a little boring, but still awesome. In orientation, I got to know so much about the University of Dayton and what it has to offer. Community is a very common word used here, in orientation, I heard the word community more than 50 times. These past two weeks I have noticed that the University of Dayton is a community. The professors, employees, students, and everyone is part of Dayton’s beautiful community. After orientation, classes started on Wednesday, August 21st. There, I met my professors, my classmates, and got to know all about my first semester classes. These past three weeks have been amazing for me; living so far from home is a challenge, but I know that it is something that I can manage. I do miss my family and friends, but hey, it is part of college. Now that I have expressed myself about the last three weeks in college, I can comment on what I expect from this year. So I do hope to pass all my classes with good grades, I hope to gain a lot of knowledge from every experience, and last but not least, I look forward to ending this year really happy and extra motivated for the next three years left here at the University of Dayton. Therefore, deciding to study at the University of Dayton has been one of some good choices I have made.

Why having a big family is the best.

Family is the best thing in life. I have four siblings, three older than me and one that is younger than me. Getting along with your family is the best; my parents are always planning different things for family nights and family weekends and honestly, they are extra fun. I have always lived with my family in our house, but now that I came to college in the United States, I do miss my family. I believe my family is different from other families because mine is actually big and we are really close. A funny this is that people ask me “Oh how many siblings do you have?” and I’m like “4 siblings” and they can’t believe it. Having a big family is something I love and love sharing with people; it’s so fun and you’ll always have someone to talk to. Living in a house of seven is never boring, there’s always something to do and we plan different weird things. Some things we do inside my house is play different games and have long conversations about different kinds of things. I do not have enough fingers to count how many times I’ve cried with my family from laughing so hard. Having long laughs with your family is definitely something one will not forget and always carry around. Also, last year when Hurricane Maria came by Puerto Rico it was obviously not safe to go outside, so we did so many fun things inside my home. Therefore, having a big family is something different and something great.

My brothers wife and baby are also here!

Trying to be a better writer.

Writing has never been a strength of mine, so I do not consider myself as a writer. I write everyday… but I write text messages, notes for the fridge, and comments for Instagram. Writing essays and blogs are not my thing, but I try my best to succeed in my class. I am a Puerto Rican student, which means that if I write, then it’s in Spanish. Another reason why I don’t consider myself as a writer is that writing in English for me is a little complicated. I believe my biggest writing strength is coming up with an idea on what to write about. Many friends of mine, ask me for different ideas on topics for their essays or home works. I love expressing myself, but I usually do it through talking conversations, but I’m sure writing can also be a way that I can express myself. I do hope that maybe all my blog assignments will help me in many different ways, and maybe I’ll like expressing myself through a blog. I look forward to my Writing Seminar class because I hope to improve my writing in so many ways. Some things I would like to improve is to try and not misspell so many words, learn how to create a good thesis statement, improve my ways of organizing the essay, among others.
